Patterns come in all kinds and costs. From the simplest to the most complicated, and from FREE to very expensive. There are Patterns that are hand written and take only a parcial page to patterns that take up whole books. Original patterns were all writen in long hand and spelled out word for word, as time passed and the same group or set of stiches kept being used the patterns or groups started being written as simbles or letters. Most modern patterns use abbreviations and pictures.
Example : To make the first ring to start many patterns would look like this :
WRITEN: Ring Five ds, Three picots seperated by five dc, Five ds close, turn, space.
or- R 5 ds, 3p sep by 5ds, 5 ds, cl, turn, sp,
or - R 5- 5- 5- 5 cl rw sp.
When using a picture, the pattern is drawn in sections, with notes to indicate the number of ds's and the order of construction, and can be used on it's own or to clearfy a written pattern.
