A tatting shuttle is the piece of equipment that is used in the process of tatting. And the only tool besides your hands that is needed to tat. Tatting with a shuttle
is the earliest way of making tatted lace. A length of thread or yarn is held by hand or wound on a spool or small bobbin inserted into the shuttle and guiding it through loops to make knots to form the patterns. It is normally oval or oblong shaped usually less than three inches long, often having a point or hook on  one end.

Tatting shuttles are available in many different materials. Originally they were
made of wood or bone. Then ivory and sterling silver. Some were very plain and some were intricately carved, or decorated. Later they were made from  celluloid, Fancy buttons , carved bone, curly maple, mother of pearl, tortoise, various types of metal both plain and precious, abalone, Bakelite, rubber and in various colliers of plastic. They can be newly made or antique, plain or  fancy, and in several sizes.

To make lace, the thread or yarn is wrapped around one hand and the shuttle
is manipulated with the other, making a series of loops and knots to follow a pattern, making the design or pattern.
