Threads and yearns for tatting depend on the type of projects you wish to make. For lace or decorative items. or miniatures regular thread or fine crochet t thread is usually preferred. For larger projects like colliers, cuffs, some dollies, doll cloths etc., heaver thread, crochet t thread or fine yard would be better. The larger the item the larger or heaver thread or yarn would be better, such as table cloths, bed spreads, and heavy curtains.
Threads and yarns not only come in different grades or coarseness, but in different types of fibers or materials. Cotton, silk, nylon, wool, etc. Threads and yarns also come in a wide variety of colors, from a single shade to a variety of mixes,or mixtures of color. It can be different colors twisted together, or single colors spliced together in different ways. Items such as beads, wires etc. can be mixed with the thread or yearn for different textures also.
Depending upon the type and size of thread or yearn the same pattern can come out in very different sizes. A regular pattern of say a Dolley can be doll house size or table top size. Often miniatures for collectors are made from a regular pattern converted to regular needle thread. Doll cloths can be made from baby patterns, and so fourth.
